Shuichi Shoji received his BA degree in 1979, a MS degree in 1981 and Doctor Degree of Engineering in 1984 from Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan. He had been served as a research associate at Faculty of Engineering in Tohoku University from 1984 to 1992. He stared new research on micro flow devices for chemical analysis systems from 1985. In 1990, he joined the Institute of Microtechnology, University of Neuchatel in Switzerland as a visiting scientist for one year and also joined as a visiting scientist in MIT for 4 months in 1991. After he came back to Tohoku University, he was an associate professor of Faculty of Engineering till 1994. In 1994 he moved to the School of Science and Engineering, Waseda University as an associated professor. He has been a professor from 1997. He had been a stirring committee member of International Conference on Micro Electro Mechanical Systems: MEMS and was a general co-chair of this 10th conference which was held in Nagoya, Japan in 1997.
Micro and nano fabrication technologies based on semiconductor technologies have been studied and applied for the microdevices of physical microsensors for space applications and chemical microsensors for bioapplications. He is one of the frontiers in MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) field and was developed microfluidics devices. He have been developed MicroTAS (Micro Total Analysis Systems) for chemical synthesis and bioanalysis. His main interest is now the microsystems for biological cell analysis.
